How to use the fence cost calculator
Use a material-only rate and a labor-only rate to avoid counting installation twice. The calculator shows each cost component separately so you can compare quotes and replace a placeholder with an actual supplier number. Rates follow the selected length unit; a per-foot rate must be converted when using meters.
Formula
Materials = length × material rate × (1 + waste/100) + gate count × gate price Subtotal = materials + labor + removal + fixed fees + material tax Total = subtotal × (1 + contingency/100)
Assumptions & scope
- Example values demonstrate the arithmetic; they are not surveyed market prices or a contractor quote.
- Gate price covers gate materials. Put gate labor and other one-time charges into fixed fees.
- Tax is applied to materials and gates only; local treatment of labor and other charges may differ.
- Waste covers linear materials, while contingency covers the full subtotal after tax.
A calculation you can check
At 100 ft, $15/ft materials, $12/ft labor, one $250 gate, 10% material waste, no tax and 10% contingency: materials and gate cost $1,900, labor costs $1,200 and the total is $3,410.
Quick reference
| Budget component | Basis |
|---|---|
| Fence materials | Length × your material rate + waste |
| Gate materials | Count × your gate price |
| Labor and removal | Length × separate entered rates |
| Contingency | Percentage of subtotal including tax |
Calculation methodology
The estimate preserves full precision through percentage calculations and displays currency totals to two decimal places. It does not estimate regional prices or interpret local tax rules.
Length conversions use the NIST SI conversion factors. See our calculation and editorial standards for precision, validation and limitations.
Common questions
Are the default prices current local prices?
No. They are editable examples. Enter recent quotes for your location, fence specification, access and site conditions.
Does this convert currencies?
No. Currency selects the label only. All prices must already be in the selected currency; no exchange-rate service is used.
What if my installer gives one installed price?
Enter it as the labor rate, set material rate and material waste to zero, and avoid entering any included gate or removal charges again. Check how tax should be handled.
