How to use the area / volume calculator
Area describes a surface; volume adds a third dimension. Choose a shape, then enter length or diameter, width or perpendicular triangle height, and depth. For an irregular site, divide it into non-overlapping rectangles, circles or triangles, calculate each part and sum the results.
Formula
Rectangle area = length × width Circle area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² Triangle area = base × perpendicular height ÷ 2 Volume = area × uniform depth
Assumptions & scope
- Circle input is diameter, not radius. Triangle height must be perpendicular to its base.
- Depth is constant across the shape. Slopes, tapered sections and irregular excavation need additional geometry.
- Allowance affects the reported order volume only. Surface area and net volume remain the measured values.
A calculation you can check
A 10 ft × 12 ft rectangle has 120 ft² of area. At 6 in deep, it contains 60 ft³ or 2.222 yd³. With 10% allowance the volume becomes 66 ft³, or 2.444 yd³; the area remains 120 ft².

Common questions
Can I mix feet and inches in one calculation?
Yes. Add an explicit unit to a measurement, such as 12 ft or 4 in. Feet-and-inches expressions such as 5' 7 1/2" also work. Unmarked values use the selected input unit.
Why does changing depth not change area?
Area uses two dimensions only. Depth changes volume, the amount of three-dimensional space.
How do I measure a triangle?
Enter the base and the perpendicular distance from that base to the opposite vertex. A sloping side length is not the triangle height.
